Politicians, Businessmen Flee Benin For Fear Of Being Kidnapped

Politicians and businessmen in Benin City, the Edo State capital, have started fleeing the city for fear of being abducted by kidnappers.
The abduction of two prominent businessmen in the city, Chief Dan Odiete, an Estate Valuer, and Chief Omoruyi Oloton, popularly known as Uyi Technical, who were kidnapped last week by unknown gunmen dressed in police uniforms and are yet to regain their freedom heightened their fear.
It was observed that the seeming inability of the police in the state to protect the citizens had forced majority of the wealthy politicians and businessmen in the city to seek the assistance of youths for protection.
But majority of those who may not want to engage the services of the youths or could not afford same, have fled the state for Abuja and Lagos. One of them, who craved anonymity said; “It is better to stay away because when you look at the mode of the kidnap operations now, it is more sophisticated, Vanguard reports.
“Are you not aware that those who kidnapped Dan Odiete were dressed in police uniform and they also wore bullet proof? You don’t even know who to trust. So it is not out of place to say people have fled. Nobody knows who is next and that is why one has to play safe first. You have to help yourself before God will help you.”
The families of Odiete and Oloton reports say are worried because they have not been contacted by the kidnappers of their sons up till now. The Edo State Police Command had so far declined to comment on any issue that had to do with kidnapping.

Abacha loot: Switzerland has returned $700m to Nigeria – Swiss envoy

ABUJA—Nearly 15 years after the death of General Sani Abacha, Nigeria’s former military ruler, the Swiss Government has said that it has so far returned to Nigeria the sum of $700 million stolen by the late dictator and deposited in several Swiss banks.
The Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr. Hans-Rudolf Hodel, announced the figure at a media briefing in Abuja, yesterday.
Hodel also hinted that his country had begun proceedings in Geneva against one of Abacha’s sons -Abba, for allegedly sponsoring a criminal organization but did not give further details.
The envoy explained also that in the last 15 years, Switzerland has returned about $1.7 billion of illicit money to their countries of origin including Angola, Peru, Nigeria and the Philippines.
The briefing was in respect of an international seminar by the Switzerland embassy and the Inter-Governmental Action Group against Money Laundering in West Africa, GIABA, and Combating the Financing of Terrorism.
The envoy however used the forum to deny the existence of fresh $1 billion being alluded to by former President Olusegun Obasanjo as still being held by the Swiss banks.
Hodel stated that the Abacha’s case in particular compelled his country to adopt more stringent measures to combat illicit dealings in its financial sector.
He said: “Swiss banking secrecy does not give any protection against criminal prosecution, neither within Switzerland nor regarding international legal assistance. Additional measures prevent assets from being withdrawn before foreign authorities and law enforcement agencies submit a formal request for legal assistance or information for investigative purposes.”
He expressed the hope that the repatriated funds would not be embezzled by corrupt officials of the benefitting nations.
He also spoke on the bilateral relations between Nigeria and Switzerland noting that $225 million was invested by Swiss businesses in the Nigerian economy in 2010 up from $201 million in 2009.
It will be recalled that a Geneva court had two months ago confirmed the sentence handed down on the son of the former Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha for belonging to a criminal organisation linked to looted assets charges.

52-Year-Old Woman Gives Birth After 25 Years Marriage

At 52, when some women have already become grandmothers, the case of Mrs. Olukorede Obamo, a teacher in Ogun State, is different.
Olukorode who got married 25 years ago just had her first child last week.
Like other women in that kind of position, she had visited hospitals, herbal centres and countless other places; yet to no avail.
When in February this year, she conceived for the first time, she found it difficult to comprehend her body chemistry.
Not able to conceal the development, she told her husband, Moses Obamo, an accountant with Medexia Nigeria Limited, Lagos.
Without wasting time, Moses, took her to a hospital for pregnancy test. At the hospital, it was confirmed that she was indeed pregnant.
In disbelief, they went to other hospitals to reconfirm the result of the test done by the first hospital, and it was positive.
Thereafter, Olukorede started to nurture the pregnancy and nine months, precisely November 13, she was delivered of a baby girl.
Since the news of her birth spread in the neighbourhood, the entire residents turned the home of the Obamos into a Mecca.
When PUNCH Metro visited the Obamos during the baby’s christening last week Wednesday, an army of visitors thronged the venue.
Expectedly, the Obamos threw a lavish party to celebrate the baby who was given more than 20 names, but the most striking of all the names is Obadunsin (It is good to serve God).
During an interview with Olukorede, she said the bundle of joy had stirred up her trust in God and reinforced her belief in spousal love.
She however said she would not forget in a hurry the psychological trauma she went through during the trying times.
Olukorede said, “It was a tough experience; I did not find it easy. I am still in my husband’s house because God is with me.
“We fought times without number but God settled us. My husband relations did not give me a breathing space; they always reminded me they needed a child.
“Curiously, my husband and I went through a series of tests and the results were that nothing was wrong with the two of us.
“At a point, I lost hope. I was in a dilemma as to the next line of action to take. My fear got to a head when I was approaching 50 and my menstrual period became irregular. In the midst of my trouble, some Christian sisters advised me to focus on God and that I should cast my burden upon God alone. Ever since that time, I focused on God more than ever before. I thank God he has given me a child at last. He has removed reproach from me.”
She said she usually carried out her medical check-ups at General Hospital, Ile Epo, Lagos, but she was eventually delivered by a nurse who is a pastor at Christ Apostolic Church in Ota, Ogun State.
“The nurse used herbs for me in addition to prayers,” Olukorede said.
She urged other women in a similar situation not to give up hope, advising them to have absolute confidence in God.
On his part, Moses expressed gratitude to God for wiping tears off their eyes. He said after a year they married without any sign of conception, they started taking drugs.
Ten years after their marriage, coupled with the fact that people had started to call them names, Moses tried his ‘luck’ outside wedlock. This experiment produced two love children – a boy and a girl.
“I was under serious pressure from some of my family members to divorce her. At a point, my people were divided on that because some of them really liked her because she is accommodating and caring.
“But when some people started to say it openly in my presence that I was impotent, I decided to play an ‘away match’ to prove them wrong. In the process I had two children.”
He said one thing that could not be taken away from his wife is her unwavering faith in God, stressing that she participated in all the church activities, particularly the one meant for the expectant mothers.
A gynecologist, Dr. Ekunjimi Olanrewaju, said though it was not a common event, nevertheless, it was not impossible for a woman of Olukorede’s age to give birth to a baby.
Olanrewaju said any woman still seeing her menses could get pregnant irrespective of her age.
He, however, said most Nigerian women entered menopause between the ages of 48 and 52.
“It is possible. There is nothing impossible under the sun. However, it is not a common event. Any woman who is seeing her period, no matter the age, can still get pregnant,” Olanrewaju said.

London-Based Nigerian Fraudsters Ran £2.7million Lotto Scam Which Led To Murder

.
Two Nigerian fraudsters, whose global £2.7m scam had deadly consequences for one family they mercilessly ripped off, were jailed today.
Police identified a total of thirteen victims all over the world, who each lost an average of £207,000, after the duo convinced them they were due an Australian lottery pay-out, inheritance, investment benefit or were sold non-existent heavy plant machinery.
Obinnam Nwokolo, 37, of 20 Chesworth Close, Erith, who amassed a valuable property portfolio in the UK and Nigeria, received six years and four months and Uchechhukwu Onuoha, 40, of Aspen Green, Erith, who entered this country on a student visa, received five years and two months.
Both pleaded guilty at Croydon Crown Court to conspiracy to defraud between October 1, 2008 and September 15 last year.
One of their victims, Betty McClellan, 62, of Hyde Park, Los Angeles was shot dead by her husband Hersey McClellan, 63, who then shot himself on June 20, 2010 after she wired £264,000 — blowing the couple’s hard-earned pension.
She transferred the sums to accounts controlled by fellow Nigerians Sergius Ene, 44, of 111 Rushden Gardens, Ilford and Osas Odia, 33, of 15 Windrush Court, Chichester Wharf, Erith, who both admitted conspiring to launder criminal property.
Ene, who received sixteen months in March for a £27,000 Euromilions lottery scam on an 83 year-old Northampton pensioner, was jailed for two years and eight months. for laundering £342,400.
The accountant, a former Haringey Council housing benefit officer, drove a Mercedes with a personalised ‘ENE’ number plate. He is currently appealing deportation and it was revealed the mother of his three children entered into a sham marriage with a French citizen of African origin just to stay in the UK.
Student Odia, who laundered £149,000, was deported in 2005 as an illegal overstayer after a forged passport conviction, but is now a permanent resident after marrying a UK national. He will be sentenced on February 11 so he can complete a management degree
Victims were telephoned, emailed or written to by Nwokolo and Onuoha, who between them spent at least £22,500 on stationary supplies as they convinced the dupes to pay for admin fees, insurance, certificates and other charges to release funds due to them
Some victims paid money to a bogus charity claiming to assist West African refugees, and one even paid for a non-existent U.S. Army General to ship his trunk of belongings from Afghanistan to Australia.
'These monies were placed in a series of bank accounts and laundered,' said prosecutor Mr. Andrew Evans. 'The fraud was carried out on an international scale.'
Mrs McClellan was convinced she had won $2.8m on the Australian lottery and sent £264,000 to cover taxes and admin costs to release the win.
'When her husband discovered she had lost all of their pension savings he shot her dead and then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide,' added Mr. Evans. Their bodies were found by their son.
An Indiana farmer, believing he had a claim on a £14.9m inheritance, lost over £339,000 and a Venezuelan businessman lost £163,000 buying a mobile crane Nwokolo and father-of-two Onuoha advertised for sale on a Spanish website.
A Bristol woman lost £312,000 chasing a £1.8m Australian lottery win and found herself arrested after paying the counterfeit £158,000 cheque the defendants sent her into her account.
'She was buying a new home and intended to settle the balance from the winnings she was expecting.
'She is now living in sheltered accommodation and feels vulnerable and extremely embarrassed and her family have lost their inheritance.'
Father-of-three Nwokolo even bought three 1,350 per-hour letter-folding machines to increase the volume of mail shots and his home contained lists with details of thousands of individuals and businesses.
Onuoha had a pile of 593 scam letters ready for postage when police raided the home he rented off Nwokolo and officers also found a prepared ‘script’ he used when duping victims over the phone.
'It is difficult to think of a larger advance free fraud than this,' announced Judge Jeremy Gold QC.
'It is on an enormous scale.
'Thousands of emails and letters were sent out across the world promising money from non-existent relatives from inheritances or non-existence lottery wins.
'You preyed on the naivety or generosity of people to extract large amounts of money from them with devastating effects on their personal lives.
'I regard this fraud as one that falls into the most serious category of advanced fee fraud, targeting vulnerable victims.'

A teaching assistant had unprotected séx with five teenage boys

A teaching assistant had unprotected séx with five teenage boys in her care and sent them pictures of herself playing with séx toys.
Married Emma Webb, 42, performed séx acts on the pupils - aged 15 to 17 - during free period and detention at the Berkshire school.
She groomed them by taking them out for meals at Kentucky Fried Chicken and giving them lifts to school, Reading Crown Court heard.
The supply teacher and mentor, who admitted a total of 30 charges relating to the offences involving five boys at the secondary school, even joked with one boy about having his baby.
Sentencing the tearful teacher to 32 months in jail, Judge John Reddihough said: 'All of these offences involved serious breaches of trust that was placed in you as a study supervisor at the school in question.
'You were expected to support and assist the five boys concerned and you were a mentor to at least two of them.
'Instead you undoubtedly groomed them for séxual purposes by buying them food and presents, inviting them to your home and driving them to and from school.'
The first youngster to catch the eye of the mother of two was a 15-year-old, who she would question about his séxual experiences. The pair were so close they drew the attention of fellow pupils.
'Others were saying they should get a bed in the classroom, it appeared she enjoyed that jest,' said Simon Heptonstall, prosecuting. 'She said she liked his bum and squeezed it.
'She continued séxual texting when her husband was not around and texted him saying, "fancy a play?".'
The court heard that Webb told the boy if he told anyone about the texts she would lose her job and that her plumber husband Andy 'had a history of violence', so the youngster would 'end up with no kneecaps.'
Webb started asking the boy to visit her and said he was 'a special boy', said Mr Heptonstall.
Webb then moved on to another student, aged 16. After taking him to KFC with a group of boys in his year, Webb started texting him and asking him to go to her home for séx.
When the boy obliged, Webb performed a séx act on him, saying 'we shouldn’t be doing this' before he left following a call from his mother.
On another visit during one of his free periods, she again performed a séx act. The pair then began to meet up around twice a week for séx when he was not in lessons.
'There was never any use of contraception,' said Mr Heptonstall.
The third boy was sent to the school’s intervention room, where Webb lifted up her skirt and told him to touch her séxually, which he did until the school bell sounded 10 or 15 minutes later.
She told him not to tell anyone, and followed that up by sending him explicit photographs by mobile, the court heard.
On another occasion she asked the boy to walk her dog with her and had séx with him on her staircase, in what the court was told was the teenager’s first séxual experience.
Webb had shown the fourth boy explicit photographs of herself using séx toys after he was sent to the intervention room for misbehaving.
'He was caught drawing a penis when he was doodling in class,' said Mr Heptonstall. 'She bluntly asked to see his.'
The pair later went on to have unprotected séxual intercourse, prompting Webb to say to the boy 'imagine if we had black babies now'.
Webb also gave the fifth boy lifts to school, and the court heard she made him feel 'as though he was the only one who cared for her.'
At a school prom, the pair posed for photographs where Webb had her feather boa draped over him, which the boy’s mother described as featuring them as 'looking like a couple'.
'She referred to him as her baby and said she loved him,' said Mr Heptonstall. 'He would walk the dog with her regularly, two or three times a week, and on one occasion they would go to her house.'
Webb was suspended from the school, which cannot be identified for legal reasons, and investigated after another teacher saw a message from the boy where he told Webb that he loved her.
The court was told that Webb initially denied that anything untoward had happened, but admitted that she was a tactile person.
Webb, who held her head in her hands as the details of her offences were read out, looked tired and red-eyed as she sat in the dock, dressed in a grey striped top.
She admitted to 16 counts relating to séx with three of the boys at an earlier court hearing, and to a further 14 charges relating to the other two boys prior to her sentencing hearing today.
The teacher admitted four counts of causing or inciting séxual activity with a child and six counts of causing or inciting séxual activity with a child by a position of trust.
She also pleaded guilty to three counts of causing a child to watch a séx act by viewing a séxual image, one count of séxual activity with a child and 16 counts of séxual activity with a child in a position of trust between September 2, 2009 and May 1, 2012.
She denied a further charge of perverting the course of justice, which the court was told would lie on file.
None of the boys can be identified for legal reasons. Most told police they had not been affected by Webb’s activities, although one said he felt he had been taken advantage of.
Jennifer Edwards, defending, said Webb had been good at her job, and that the boys had said she was kind to them.
She said Webb regretted her actions and hoped to rebuild her marriage after her release from prison, but could not give a reason why she had embarked on séxual relationships with pupils.
'Why on earth did she do this? There was nothing for her to gain from having séxual play with boys at her school,' said Ms Edwards. 'There was everything for her to lose and nothing to gain.'
She added: 'They are young and vulnerable but these are young boys on the road to manhood.'
Ms Edwards suggested her offending was in part linked to the murder of her brother several years ago.
'Each of the boys she became involved with, it appears she spoke to them about her lost brother,' she said. 'Perhaps she was looking for some sort of solace.'
No details of the murder were heard by the court.
Ms Edwards added that the judge had been sent a 'heartfelt' letter by Webb, plus others in support from other people, including her parents, her children and her husband, who is standing by her.
Judge Reddihough sentenced Webb to 32 months in prison, after he took off a third of her sentence for an early guilty plea.
He told her she could expect to serve half of that behind bars, including the 168 days she has already spent in custody.
'It may be that to some extent the boys were over 16 at the time of some of the offences, ' said the judge. 'But they were under 18 and you were in a position of trust towards them.
'What you did will have had an adverse effect on the complainants.
'There is a real risk they will have twisted attitudes towards females and séx, and be confused as to the appropriate boundaries between adults and children or young people in their care.'
Despite attending court for all of Webb’s previous appearances, her husband was not present today.
A woman who answered the door at their home in Reading said that he was at work.

It's Ok for Few Nigerian Pastors to Own Private Jet; Pastor Ashimolowo

The founder and Senior Pastor of the Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC), Matthew Ashimolowo has said clergymen who own private jets could be saving lots of monies for their congregations.

Speaking as a guest on Channels Television’s weekend programme, Sunrise, Pastor Ashimolowo accused the media of blowing out of proportion the recent acquisition of a private jet by a Nigerian pastor insisting that only few out of the myriads of clergy in the country own jets.

He said “Out of probably 20 million clergy, there may not be more than six" who own private jets. “There is a blowing out of proportion by the media because six people out of 20 million is not a large proportion.

"Then when you take those four or six individuals look at their itinerary and find out; is it even saving money for their organisation to have it or is it costing the organisation?” Pastor Ashimolowo pointed out

Kid Rock And Obama: "No Hard Feelings

Kid Rock, who is a Detroit native like Romney, seemed resigned to another term with President Obama, but at least he acted civil about it.
Kid Rock and Barack Obama: an unlikely pairing, but one that happened this weekend. You'd think the two would run in separate circles - Obama with the Washington DC elite, and Kid Rock with... something different. But Kid Rock met Obama this weekend, at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, DC, and the Detroit rocker and President seemingly had a good time.
Kid Rock was an outspoken, very public supporter of Mitt Romney during the last election, performing at campaign stops for the failed presidential candidate and allowing use of his songs for the campaign. But when Kid Rock met Obama this weekend, it was all smiles.
“It was nice,” Rock told CNN. “I saw the president tonight. He said, ‘I’m still here.’ I said, ‘No hard feelings.’”
“You cross your fingers, you try to move forward, you hope for the best,” he said. “You respect the office of the president of the United States, and the great thing is in four years, we get to choose again

Bishop Oyedepo asked to pay N2 billion over kindergarten’s death

The General Overseer of Winners Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo has been asked to pay N2 billion within 14 days as general damages or face legal action, for the death of three-year-old Imienfan Omokaro who got drowned at Kingdom Heritage Model School operated by Winners Chapel in Benin.

A letter written by Omokaro’s Counsel, Prince Peter E. Uwadiae-Igbinigie and, dated November 28, 2012 and made available to journalists in Benin, explained that the amount was “for the callous and senseless killing of our client’s daughter, Miss Imienfan Omokaro.”

Besides, Mr. Omokaro’s lawyers want Kingdom Heritage Model School to tender unreserved apology in three national newspapers, warning that if the demands were not met within 14 days, “we have the irrevocable instructions of our client to commence legal action against the school (Kingdom Heritage Model School) and Church (Winners Chapel) without any further correspondence from this Chambers.”

Imienfan Omokaro, a KG I pupil of Kingdom Heritage Model School, was said to have drowned in a drum of water in a toilet in the school on November 1, 2012.

Also, teachers of the school allegedly did not inform her mother when she came to pick her from school on that fateful day until late in the evening.

The school authorities and Winners Chapel had reportedly kept the girl for more than an hour, praying for her before finally taking her to Irowa Hospital in Benin, where she was confirmed dead.
The girl had died before being brought to hospital, doctors said.

Man Jailed For 7 Years For Having Séx With Daughter

An Oredo Magistrate Court in Benin yesterday sentenced a 47-year-old man, Godwin Allu, to seven years imprisonment with hard labour for having séx with his daughter.
The accused who pleaded guilty to the one-count charge of having unlawful carnal knowledge of his 12-year-old daughter, Blessing, was said to have committed an offense punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code Cap. 48 Vol. II of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria, 1976 as applicable in Edo State.
Prosecuting counsel, Miss. Loretta Asaka, told the court that on November 20, 2012, one Mrs. Verlaine Enemaku reported the case at the charge room of the Central Juvenile Welfare Centre of the Nigeria Police in Benin, after being told by the Headmistress of Obaseki Primary School, Benin, that blood stains were discovered on the victim’s uniform.
The complainant said upon interrogation, the victim told the head mistress that her father had séx with her three times on different occasions. It was gathered that the victim, who was admitted and treated at the Benin Central Hospital was later discharged and taken to an orphanage.
Delivering judgment in the case, Chief Magistrate Peter Asemota, who expressed gladness that the accused voluntarily pleaded guilty to the crime, pronounced him guilty as charged.
Asemota, who observed that cases of séxual offenses were on the increase in her jurisdiction, said it was necessary for the court to join other stakeholders in taking a serious stand against the vice.
“For this reason, the convict must be put out of circulation for sometime so that he would not be able to continue with his bestial activities,” the magistrate said.
The court thereafter sentenced the accused to seven years imprisonment with hard labour and no option of fine

Tragedy: Ex-Nigerian Footballer Dies Shortly After Wedding

Tragedy recently struck the household of former fringe defender of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Obinna Nnodim, who passed on in Owerri
Jerry Uche, an ex-teammate to the former Julius Berger football club of Lagos stopper disclosed to newsmen that Nnodim gave up the ghost in a mysterious circumstance shortly after his wedding ceremony with his fiancée.
After an injury he sustained on the field, he suffered a broken knee which necessitated his travel to Thailand where he underwent knee surgery. However, that didn’t stop him from playing actively.
“Obinna was looking hale and hearty when I saw him few days before his death. He just returned from Thailand for his wedding.
We all wined and dined together only to receive the sad news few days ago that he was dead. This is a big shock to me and the rest of us.
I just want to believe that there is more to it than meets the eyes. His mother has been ill for so many years and to make matter worse he is the bread winner of the family’’,Uche lamented.
Until his death, Nnodim , 31, featured for Arugo FC of Owerri, Julius Berger, Dolphins and Sharks Football Club of Port Harcourt.
The high point of his career was when he helped Julius Berger to reach the final of the African Winners Cup now known as the Confederation Cup in 2003.
Meanwhile, Nnodim’s burial which had been initially slated for Thursday has been suspended indefinitely by the family until the cause of death is ascertained

Blasphemous Photo Of Obama As Jesus Christ

The painting is called “Truth” – and shows the president with his arms outstretched. A crown of thorns rests on his head.
It was originally supposed to debut nearly four years ago at New York City’s Union Square. But that event was cancelled due to public outrage.
In the piece, by Michael D’Antuono, the President is shown wearing a suit and red tie with his arms outstretched.

But instead of actually being nailed to a cross like Jesus, Mr Obama’s arms are extended drawing back a blue curtain. He has a crown of thorns resting on his head.

According to Michael D’Antuono……

‘I always regretted cancelling my exhibit in New York because I feel my First Amendment rights should override someone’s hurt feelings,’ Mr D’Antuono told Fox News

Black Hole Found, 17 Billion Times as Massive as Sun, Frightens Scientists

gibsonstylepstudio.blogspot.com
You would probably not enjoy the galaxy NGC 1277. Never mind that it’s far — 220 million light-years away in the constellation Perseus. The problem is that at its center is a giant, giant black hole, 17 billion times as massive as our sun, so big that scientists calculate it makes up 59 percent of the mass of the galaxy’s disc.
Astrophysicists have long believed that there’s a black hole at the center of our Milky Way, but it probably accounts for something like 0.1 percent of the galaxy’s center. The one in NGC 1277, scientists report in today’s edition of the journal Nature, is the second largest they’ve ever observed, and it upends what they thought about how galaxies form.

Black holes, as you’ll recall, are objects in space so massive that their gravity consumes everything around them — stars, planets, matter, energy, even light. Earthly scientists can only observe their effect on the space around them, not see them directly. Be grateful we’re not close to one. They’re actually useful to astrophysicists in explaining the nice spiral shape of many galaxies — you need something massive in the middle for the stars to circle — but NGC 1277 is an extreme.

“This is a really oddball galaxy,” said Karl Gebhardt of the University of Texas at Austin, a member of the team that made the find. “It’s almost all black hole. This could be the first object in a new class of galaxy-black hole systems.”
Gebhardt and colleagues at the McDonald Observatory have been calculating the mass of different black holes — no small task considering their powerful gravity. The researchers put together an animation of how stars in that distant galaxy would behave, whipping around the center to avoid falling in.

What would you see if you lived on a habitable planet in that far-away galaxy and could look toward the center? Probably nothing that makes sense to human eyes. Black holes have such powerful gravity that they distort the space around them.

Here’s hoping your planet is in a nice, stable orbit around a star far from the action. If not, you might be drawn right into the black hole, destroyed so quickly

15 Year Old Girl Beheaded For Refusing To Get Married

A teenage girl was beheaded by a relative in northern Afghanistan after she turned down his marriage proposals, according to reports. The victim, named as Gisa, was decapitated with a knife in the Imam Sahib district of Kunduz province on Tuesday, local police said. She is believed to be around 15-years-old.

A police spokesman said two men, named as Sadeq and Massoud, had been arrested following the teenage girl’s murder.

The two men are understood to be close relatives of the victim that live in the same village. Local police sources have said the men behind the attack wanted to marry the girl, but their advances had been turned down by victim’s father.

Gisa is understood to have been attacked as she returned to her home in Kulkul village after going out to collect water from a nearby well. Her father told a local news agency he had not wanted his daughter to get married because she was too young.

Afghanistan’s Taliban regime – notorious for its oppression of women in the country – was ousted in 2001, but extreme violence against women is still rife. In 2009, the Elimination of Violence Against Woman law was introduced in Afghanistan, criminalising child marriage, forced marriage, ‘giving away’ a girl or woman to settle a dispute, among other acts of violence against the female population of the ultra-conservative Islamic nation.

But the UN has said there is a ‘long way to go’ before the rights of Afghan women are fully protected. Comprehensive official statistics on the number of incidents of violence against women in the country are difficult to establish, with the majority of cases going unreported.

However, in the year to March 2011, Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission registered over 2,000 acts of violence against women.

The NATO-led International Security and Assistance Force has given high priority to re-establishing women’s rights that were eradicated under the Taliban as part of its efforts to create a security strategy for Afghanistan.

But with the deadline for international troops to pull out of the country – scheduled for the end of 2014 – looming, activists have warned that the outlook for the female population remains bleak. Human Rights Watch has said women’s rights are increasingly at risk in the run up to the scheduled draw-down of NATO forces, with early and forced marriage, impunity for violence against women and lack of access of justice among the long list of challenges they still face.

Gay Muslim plans to open world’s first mosque for gays, where same-sex marriages will be conducted

Mohammed Ludovic Lütfi Zahed (right), an Algerian Muslim living in France who is married to his gay partner Qiyam al-Din (left), hopes to open a mosque for homosexuals
Mohammed Ludovic Lütfi Zahed, an Algerian Muslim living in Paris is planning to open a ‘mosque for gays’ in France and hopes to eventually conduct same-sex Muslim marriages.

According to reports, Zahed, a homosexual man is married to his gay partner and hopes to open the doors by the end of the month. He also plans to break another Islamic taboo by refusing to segregate women and men.

Zahed says the mosque, in a Buddhist chapel in Paris, will be very different from the conventional mosque. “In normal mosques, women have to sit in the back seats and wear a headscarf and gay men are afraid of both verbal and physical aggression. After performing the Hajj, I realized that a mosque for gays was a must for gay Muslims who want to perform their prayers.”
Zahed is married to Qiyam al-Din, a South African man. Zahed diagnosed with AIDS at 19, became very spiritual but reveals he regularly receives hate mail from Muslims globally, but added he is ‘comfortable’ in his own skin The pair married  in South Africa where same-sex marriage is legal, and their marriage was approved by an imam in France, but was not recognised by the previous government as the French are bitterly divided on gay marriages.
Reports that the French President Francois Hollande plans to enact his ‘marriage for everyone plan’ within a year of coming to power in May is circulation but vocal opposition from religious leaders, some politicians and parts of rural France has sparked protests with an estimated 70,000 marchers.

Riot police used tear gas to break up violence between those who support and oppose the change in law.

As well as opposition from those against gay marriage, the couple will likely face persecution from the French Muslim community. Homosexuality is a religious, political and cultural flashpoint among much of the Arab and Islamic world.

Zahed told Al Arabiya News: ‘Being married in front of my family, was like a new start of life for me.

‘I could have never imagined such a day would come, seeing the joy in my parents’ eyes after they had battled with my sexuality and tried with all their might to change the course of my sexual orientation.’
He added that if his marriage is not recognised in France he will return to South Africa
